This isn’t happeningaround you —it works because of you.

Swine health challenges aren’t standing still, and neither are we. The National Swine Health Strategy, built by the National Pork Board, producers, veterinarians, and industry partners, provides a coordinated, science-based path forward to address the most concerning health problems now and stay ahead of what’s next.

The challenges we face are real. But so is the momentum. And you’re the driving force.

Two Goals. One Direction.

Producers made it clear where to focus. The National Swine Health Strategy reflects it.

Goal 1

Reduce the impact of domestic diseases.

PRRSV and PEDV cost producers every year. The strategy targets both for elimination while also reducing the spread of pathogens across the industry. This work is happening right now, in barns like yours.

  • Update & Advance PEDV and PRRSV Elimination Frameworks
  • PEDV clean certification rolling out through U.S. SHIP
  • Biosecurity benchmarking and pathogen spread reduction in progress
  • Define and evaluate market haul transport sanitation
  • Advance site health status sharing and biocontainment practices
  • Ongoing & targeted research to understand gaps and financial impact of PRRSV and PEDV
Goal 2

Keep foreign and emerging diseases out.

ASF. CSF. FMD. Foreign animal diseases that could disrupt an operation and the entire pork supply chain. The strategy strengthens efforts to prevent these threats while helping producers and the industry prepare to respond if one reaches the U.S.

  • Continued investment in Secure Pork Supply and AgView®, along with coordination with USDA programs like U.S. SHIP
  • Global disease monitoring and early detection
  • Updated FAD response planning to ensure it’s producer-ready

The Road to a Healthier Herd.

The National Swine Health Strategy was built step by step with producer input shaping every mile. Here’s where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

  1. 1
Step 1Forum advisement, NPB Strategic Plan, revising FAD prep work
  2. 2
Step 2Producer input gathered through surveys and listening sessions
  3. 3
Step 3Advisory group identified goals and priorities
  4. 4
Step 4Plans drafted with swine health industry partners
  5. 5
Step 5State and industry feedback collected
  6. 6
Step 6Swine Health Advisory Committee assembled and actively prioritizing tactics
  7. 7
Step 7 — You Are HerePriority work initiated on PEDV, PRRSV, biosecurity and FAD preparedness
  8. 8
Step 8 — The DestinationHealthier herds. Stronger producers

Voices from the Farms That Built It.

This strategy didn’t come from a boardroom. It came from 822 completed surveys, 47 listening sessions, and the voices of producers in 36 states. Here’s what some of them are saying now.

Brandon Schafer
Minnesota Producer, Swine Health Advisory Committee Member
“This initiative has the potential to change the industry as much as anything the Pork Checkoff has ever embarked upon. The scope of effort needed to achieve these goals cannot be overstated, and I look forward to the challenge.”
Joe Dykhuis
Michigan Producer, Swine Health Advisory Committee Member
“One of our main goals of the new Swine Health Advisory Committee is making sure we’re seeing real, measurable progress, not just plans on paper. We need to know what’s working, where we’re making gains and where to focus next. That’s how we make this effort count on the farm.”
Dr. Seth Krantz
Tosh Farms Veterinarian, NPB Board Member, Swine Health Advisory Committee Member
“Producers have felt the significant mental and economic stress of swine disease for too long. The time has come for our industry to unite around the long-term mission of improving herd health. It will take daily individual actions and decisions on farms around the nation to make a measurable difference for the entire pork industry, but that is the goal.”

Straight Talk on Swine Health.

The Next Mile is a video series from the National Pork Board that puts the real conversations about swine health on the record. Hosted by our trusted team of swine veterinarians, each episode brings together the experts, veterinarians and producers shaping the National Swine Health Strategy so you can hear what’s being done and why, directly from the source.

Episode 01: Navigating Disease Prevention

Dr. Peterson sits down with Dr. Cara Haden, Director of Welfare and Biosecurity at Pipestone, for an honest conversation about biosecurity, challenges producers face, and strategies for nurturing a stronger, healthier herd.
