The U.S. pork industry continues to battle porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and the job isn’t finished yet. During development of the National Swine Health Strategy (NSHS), producers identified PEDV elimination as a key industry priority. Reaching that goal requires a clear picture of where PEDV exists, where progress is being made and where additional work is needed.
New advancements to AgView®, a digital contact tracing program, allow participating producers and animal health officials to manage their U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (U.S. SHIP) PEDV Clean certification and share PEDV health status information.

Better Information Supports Better Decisions
A disease can’t be eliminated if the industry doesn’t have a clear picture of where it stands.
Access to official disease-status information better equips producers, veterinarians and animal health officials to make decisions that support herd health and reduce disease spread. Consistent status reporting helps the industry measure progress toward PEDV elimination goals and identify areas where additional work may be needed.
Historically, maintaining disease-status information often relied on separate records, emails and manual processes. AgView gives participating producers one secure place to manage that information and share it only with the authorized Official State Agency (OSA) when needed.
OSAs are state animal health officials or agencies responsible for administering animal health programs. They play an important role in verifying disease status and supporting animal health initiatives. The new integration allows participating producers and OSAs to share and streamline PEDV Clean status information within AgView to USDA’s Site Status Verification Database.
Producer data remains confidential. Information shared in AgView is permission-based, meaning producers control who can access their operation’s information. OSAs only have access to the information needed to administer applicable certifications in US SHIP.
Built for More Than One Disease
While the latest enhancements support PEDV-related activities, AgView’s mission remains broader.
AgView was created to strengthen traceability and improve the pork industry’s ability to prepare for and respond to foreign animal disease challenges. The same tools that will help the industry respond to diseases like African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF) can also support ongoing efforts to manage and reduce the impact of domestic diseases.
