David Newman is the senior vice president of market growth for the National Pork Board. Newman leads a team of 16 professionals tasked with growing market demand domestically and internationally, as well as the organization’s health and nutrition research and outreach.

Background

Prior to his employment with the National Pork Board, David had a successful career as a full professor at Arkansas State University. He served as the leader of the meat science program and the university’s swine research facility. 

David is the owner and president of both Newman Farm Heritage Berkshire Pork and Quality Meat Solutions, LLC, a firm that conducts research on meat-case metrics and quality and provides consulting.

Education

David obtained his bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Missouri and his Ph.D. in meat and animal science from North Dakota State University. 

Having extensive knowledge in meat science and muscle biology, David has been working in the areas of meat quality and livestock production for more than 20 years. He has a deep knowledge of the retail sector and has managed the National Retail Benchmarking Audit since 2012.

Industry Involvement

Serving six years on the National Pork Board starting in 2016, David also served two years as the board president in 2020 and 2021. He has been involved in numerous committees and task forces, spanning from a focus in strategic planning, swine health, producer services and domestic marketing. 

David had an active role in helping expand international markets for U.S. pork, including serving as an executive committee member of the U.S. Meat Export Federation since 2021. He has participated in several producer delegations to major markets including Mexico, Japan and China.
